Hunters 101

L: Mom, what do hunters do?
M: Well, some hunters are just people that need to feed their families so they hunt animals to eat.
L: Are they nice?
M: Lots of hunters are nice, but some probably aren't very nice and just like to hurt animals.
L: Like the guy on "The Rescuers Down Under"?  He had cages.
M: Yep, just like him.  He wasn't very nice to animals.
L: Why do people need to feed their families?
M: Well we all need food to eat right?  Sometimes people can't just go to the grocery store or the ranch to get their meat, so they need to go out and get the animals themselves.
L: People eat animals!?
M: Yep.  Heavenly Father put animals here so we could eat them, but we should be kind to them and not eat them all the time.
L: But animals don't like to be chewed!
M: (between gasps of laughter) Well sometimes that's just how life is.  Remember how the lions eat gazelle?  They need to eat the gazelle to live right?  Well, sometimes we need to eat animals to live too, but we should be kind to them.  That's why we get some of our meat from the ranch instead of the grocery store.
L: Like what kind of animals do we eat?
M: Like cows or chickens or turkeys...
L: Do we eat peacocks?
M: Nope.
L: Cats and Dogs?
M: Nope.
L: Oh.  Giraffes have long necks so we can't fit them in our mouths?
M: Well, we don't eat giraffes, but cows are pretty big too.  We just eat parts of the animals.
L: Like...their leg is a small part?
M: Yep, their legs are small parts.
L: Is Daddy a hunter?
M: Not now, but if we ever couldn't go to the store to get our food, we would have to hunt to feed our family.
L: Does he have lots of guns!?!?
M: No.  We don't have any guns.
L: What are guns for?

...
At this point Scott and I desperately tried to change the topic...that was not a conversation I intended to have with my three year old, but he doesn't seem too traumatized yet!

iChat

We had a post-Thanksgiving chat with my siblings in the Great White North.  We thought this music video was pretty awesome.  Thanks Bubba :)

While Scott's Away, the Children Play

Here are a few funny things I've heard in the last day or two:

While Parker was napping, Landon helped me with one of my sewing projects.  We were talking about the disciples and how Jesus helped them find fish:

L: Do those disciples want to eat the fish?
M: I'm sure they were fishing so they would have something to eat for dinner.  Aren't we lucky that we can buy our food from the store and we don't have to work all day to get it?
L: Yeah.  Do the disciples like fish?
M: Probably.  Do you like fish?
L:.......(long pause).....Only ham fish.  Not eye fish.
(That one made my day)

At bedtime (well, it was supposed to be bedtime...):

L: Hey Parker.  I'm your Doctor and I need to check you.
P: Ok!
L: I'm not anyone else's Dr., just yours....and Mommy's and Daddy's.
P: Ok.
L: Here, come on this bench.  This is the bench where I check people, you know?
P: Ok (as he walks over)
L: I'm checking your heart.
P: Oh. Hey! I ok!
L: NO YOU ARE NOT OK!!  You are SICK!
P: Oh.  I need Tyenol (Tylenol)
L: Well, if you want Tylenol, you need to go out there.  See, your heart is getting sick.
P: Oh....I your Doctor!
L: No!  You are not a Doctor, you are a boy who is sick!  I'm YOUR Doctor.
P: No, I Pahker!!
(This conversation went on for awhile, but I had to leave the hallway before I burst out laughing!)

During Parker's Umpteenth timeout for the night:

P: Hey!  You stop it!
M: Parker, if you talk like that you'll just have to stay in timeout longer.
P: (long wail with a smack to my leg) I hit!  (which is why he was in timeout to begin with)
M: K, if you hit you'll have to stay in timeout and you won't get to come out and play.
P: ........(long pause)..........um, love!  Mommy I love you!
M: I love you too, now have a timeout and then you can come try again.
P: (big kiss) I kiss your leg!  (another big kiss) I kiss your leg again!  I love you Mommy!
(and he successfully got out of timeout...what can I say, I'm a sucker!)

Best Ever

Ok, my sister sent this to me and I think it's the best gift she's ever given.  It's hilarious!  This year's "Elf Yourself" has really outdone itself.  Thanks Stacey :)

REGINA SPEKTOR!!!

We were lucky enough to see one of our favorite artists in concert this last weekend.  Regina played at the Fillmore in Denver (such a cool venue - small and intimate!).  She was A.MAZE.ING.  I really can't believe how talented and creative she is.  we loved every minute of it!  Here we are waiting for the show (Jupiter One opened and were really good - the lead singer actually played the violin for Regina).

And for your viewing pleasure, here's a montage from the concert - you do NOT want to miss the middle a cappella song she did.  So great!

Snow, snow, snow

This is what it looked like outside just a few days ago (this is the drift on our roof!):

It completely dumped snow!  And today it was 70 degrees out.  I LOVE this weather!  It makes you grateful for everything - you want to enjoy the warm weather for a week and then enjoy the snow for a week.  It's wonderful!  We went sledding for the first time, too - the kids loved it.  Maybe next time we'll take our camera along...

BEFORE last week's big snow, we had one little snow that the boys just had to play in.  Here are a few pictures from that:

Needless to say, they love having snow around this year!

Before Halloween we took the boys to a pumpkin patch.  We had so much fun there - they got to paint pumpkins, pick out one to carve and play in a bouncy house and straw maze.  It was a blast!

And another totally random note:
Landon has decided that he doesn't like taking naps all the time anymore, so some days we find him like this at around 5 o'clock:
